Composition of Propolis

Watched closely Propolis is a resinous substance appears as brown (can range from light yellow to black), with an aroma of spices and balsamic resins, the taste is bitter and pungent. The consistency varies with temperature: pliable and sticky at 30 ° C brittle at low temperatures. Melting point 60 - 70 ° C. One can not give a precise chemical composition to propolis as it varies depending from the collection area.

It can be assumed, however, a composition indicative that might be fine for all varieties of propolis, that takes into account the main components of those who found themselves in the analyzes and studies carried out in different parts of the world.

Approximate composition:

40 - 60% resins, balsams (soft resins);
20 - 30% beeswax, vegetable wax, fixed oils;
3 - 7% essential oils other volatile substances;
3 - 7% pollen sugars;
5 to 15% organic matter different (minerals, wood, water, other).

The active ingredients of various types, are distributed very heterogeneously distributed in all the fractions, representing 10 to 20% of the total. A composition varies so let us imagine that there are many interesting substances. We will analyze only the most interesting.

The most studied is surely that of polyphenols or flavonoids (flavonoids, fenolacidi and their esters, alcohols and aldehydes with aromatic nucleus). Here are the most popular: chrysin, galangin and quercetin. Were found to exist also other substances of interest such as phenolic compounds, terpenes and coumarins.
